Tribunal dismisses Oyo PDP lawmaker, announces APC candidate winner of Assembly election
The Oyo State Election Petition Court of the Governorship and State House of Assembly on Saturday nullified Mr. Kazeem Olayanju’s statement as the winner of the Irepo/Olorunsogo constituency House of Assembly election.
DAILY POST found that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Olayanju, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate as the winner of the election in March.
But, not satisfied with the outcome, Mr. Mustapha Ajibola Azeez, the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, approached the election petition tribunal, urging the tribunal to recognize him (Azeez) as the election winner.
In his reasoning, Azeez insisted that the election of March 9th election had irregularities as he urged the tribunal to nullify the statement made by Olayanju.
In his request EPT/OY/SHA/30/2019, the petitioner, Azeez; Hon Azeez v Olayanju, (IREPO/OLORUNSOGO) said he was the true winner of that election.
The court, however, proclaimed Ajibola as the winner on Saturday night and nullified Olayanju’s statement.
The tribunal stated that it was incorrect to cancel ward 3 election in the electoral district of Irepo local government.
Among other things, the tribunal ruled that the election actually took place at ward 3 in the local government area of Irepo, contrary to the respondents ‘ application.
The court also ruled that the outcome burning incident at the ward collation center did not mean that in issues there was no election at the polling units.
