Sowore: Banky W – Nigeria has a way of penalizing the Guiltless

Banky W, a Nigerian musician turned politician, responded to a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja ordering the State Services Department to release Omoyele Sowore, a pro-democracy activist, on bail immediately.

DAILY POST reports that an Abuja Federal High Court on Tuesday granted bail to Omoyele Sowore, a co-convener of the RevolutionNow movement.

The Taiwo-led court of Justice Taiwo said that there was no longer a surviving order holding Sowore in detention, hence the need for bail.

However, while releasing him to his lawyer, Femi Falana, Justice Taiwo ordered Sowore to deposit his international passport to the court.

The RevolutionNow movement’s co-convener allegedly called for a revolution over the current federal government’s alleged failure.

Banky-W, reacting via Twitter, described Nigeria as a country that takes pride in punishing the innocent.

“I am so grateful that by granting Omoyele Sowore’s release our justice system made the right call. Nigeria has a way to punish the innocent and trample on ordinary citizens ‘ rights, dreams and hopes.

“We lose a little piece of our soul each time our leaders do wrong and get away with it. We get numb, we lose hope, and we subconsciously accept that this is how things are, and we can’t say or do anything to change it.

“It wasn’t necessary for Mr Sowore to be a voter or volunteer to see that this was clearly an infringement of a fundamental human right and a serious injustice. Freedom of speech and the right to protest peacefully is every Nigerian citizen’s unassailable right.

“May God bless those who stood on the right side of history in our justice system by doing the right thing.

“May God reinforce, comfort and bless Sowore, his wife and family, as they have endured the most difficult times while only trying to speak up for a better Nigeria,” he said.
